What is a unit and how do I determine what the workload will be for a course?

Course load can be calculated based on the number of units per class.

The time commitment necessary for a course can be calculated using the unit number. During the standard academic year, one unit equals about three hours of work per week (one hour in class and two hours outside of class). For example, a three unit course is 9 hours of work per week. Because Summer Session during the summer quarter is shorter than a standard quarter by two weeks, a more accurate estimate may be closer to four hours of work per unit per week. However, workload for each individual will be affected by their specific course selection and circumstances.
