What is the tuition refund policy?

If you have a change of plans before the first day of classes, June 23, 2025, for a full tuition refund. After the first day of class, tuition is refunded on a per diem basis starting with the first day through the first 60 percent of the term for each quarter. The per diem tuition rates for 2024-2025 are listed on Stanford's student services page.

Example: a full-time undergraduate student who withdraws from Stanford on the 10th day of the Summer Quarter would be assessed $3,741.30 (10 days x $374.13) in tuition. The student would be eligible for a refund of $16,835.70 ($20,577 - $3,741.30) minus any scholarship or loan funds that would be returned to the source of those funds.

  Summer

Direct Deposit:

Direct deposit is the quickest, easiest, and most secure way to receive your refund. You can expect to see your funds within three business days after processing. For instructions on how to enroll in direct deposit, please visit the Student Services page.

Paper Check

If you are not enrolled in direct deposit, you will be sent a paper check using the mailing address listed in Axess.

To ensure a smooth refund process, please confirm your personal information and address in Axess is up to date.
On average, paper checks take between 7 and 10 business days to process and mail (longer for mailing to international addresses).

NOTE: Cash overpayments will remain on your account to apply to future charges. Any remaining cash overpayments will be refunded after summer quarter in August. If you would like to have your refund issued sooner, you may submit a request via ServiceNow ticket

Please note that refund requests should be initiated by the student; we cannot process refund requests from authorized payers. Student overpayment refund request
